Bipartisan Oklahoma Senate Committee Vote Advances Bill Protecting Farmers’ Access To Essential Crop Protection Tools
Today, the Oklahoma Senate Agriculture and Wildlife Committee passed SB 1078—common-sense legislation that will safeguard farmers' continued access to critical crop protection tools and ensure that federally approved product labels are the law.
“We thank the bipartisan group of Oklahoma lawmakers for standing firmly with our farmers over anti-ag activists and in support of Senate Bill 1078,” said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. “This legislation provides the regulatory certainty needed to protect Oklahoma farmers' access to the tools they depend on to safely, affordably, and reliably grow the crops that feed and fuel us all.”
SB 1078 ensures that any pesticide registered with the EPA—and sold under a label consistent with the EPA's own determinations—is sufficient to satisfy requirements for health and safety warnings.
Crop protection tools like pesticides help farmers control invasive weeds, keep yields high and costs low, and implement conservation practices. Oklahoma farmers rely on these products to reliably grow crops like wheat, corn, soybeans, and others vital to supporting the state's $11 billion agriculture economy.
“The Modern Ag Alliance applauds Senator Murdock and others for putting Oklahoma farmers first,” added Burns-Thompson. “We look forward to working with legislators over the coming weeks to reaffirm that federally-approved product labels are the law.”
