Modern Ag Alliance Thanks Mississippi Senate Committee For Defending Key Agricultural Inputs

The Mississippi Senate Judiciary A Committee recently passed SB 2472—legislation that will ensure farmers' continued access to critical crop protection tools.

"Senate Bill 2472 provides farmers with regulatory certainty and stands behind the strong, science-based pesticide review processes already in place," said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. “This vote is a win for Mississippi growers and consumers, and a welcome sign that policymakers are serious about reigning in the litigation industry and its relentless, and often meritless, attacks against the tools farmers rely on to feed us all."

SB 2472 ensures that any pesticide registered with the U.S. EPA—and sold under a label consistent with the EPA’s own determinations—is sufficient to satisfy state label warning requirements.

Crop protection tools like pesticides help farmers control invasive weeds, keep yields high and costs low, and implement conservation practices. Mississippi farmers rely on these tools to reliably grow crops, like soybeans, corn, cotton, and others which are vital to supporting the state's $8 billion agriculture economy.

“The Modern Ag Alliance commends the leadership of Sen. Brice Wiggins and the bill's seven co-sponsors for standing with Mississippi farmers,” added Burns-Thompson. “We look forward to working with legislators over the coming weeks to move this common-sense legislation forward.”

This legislation is also supported by a broad coalition of Mississippi agricultural and producer organizations, including Catfish Farmers of Mississippi; Delta Council; Mississippi Agricultural Industry Council; Mississippi Cattlemen’s Association; Mississippi Farm Bureau; Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association; Mississippi Seedsmen’s Association; Mississippi Sweet Potato Council.
