Iowa Senate Committee Advances SSB 1051, Standing With Farmers Over Trial Lawyers & Extreme Anti-Agriculture Activists
Today, the Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee approved SSB 1051—legislation that ensures farmers' continued access to essential crop protection tools.
"SSB 1051 gives farmers the certainty they need to plan for the future while reinforcing the strong, science-backed systems already in place," said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. "This vote makes it clear—the voice of Iowa farmers outweighs that of the litigation industry and extreme activist groups from D.C. and California. SSB 1051 will help safeguard Iowa farmers' access to the tools they need to compete and ensure we have enough to eat."
SSB 1051 ensures that federally-approved pesticide labels remain the standard, providing uniformity across states and safeguarding farmers from the costly consequences of regulatory uncertainty. We’re working alongside Iowa partners and other groups like the Agribusiness Association of Iowa, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Seed Association, and Iowa Soybean Association to ensure this vital bill becomes law.
Crop protection tools help farmers control invasive weeds, keep yields high and costs low, and implement conservation practices. As the leading U.S. producer of corn, Iowa relies heavily on the most commonly used herbicide: over 73% of soybean and 60% of all corn acres in Iowa depend on glyphosate to control invasive weeds, reduce costs, and ensure food security.
"The Modern Ag Alliance and farmers across Iowa are grateful for the support of Senator Bousselot and the Judiciary Committee," said Burns-Thompson. "We look forward to working with Senate leaders over the coming weeks to ensure federally-approved product labels are the law.”
