Georgia House and Senate Ag Committees Unanimously Approve Legislation to Protect Farmers and Our Food Supply

As of today, the Georgia Senate and House Committees on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs voted unanimously to advance Senate Bill 144 and House Bill 424—legislation that would maintain Georgia farmers' access to essential crop protection tools.

"Standing with Georgia farmers means standing with Georgia families. SB 144 and HB 424 ensure Georgia families can continue to count on an affordable and abundant food supply," said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson, who testified before both committees. "We thank Georgia lawmakers for their unanimous, bipartisan vote to ensure farmers in the Peach State continue to have access to all the tools in their toolbox so they can grow the food and fiber we depend on.”

SB 144/HB 424 upholds a science-based approach to pesticide regulation by clarifying that federally approved pesticide labels remain the standard for health and safety warnings. The Modern Ag Alliance is proud to work alongside the Georgia Agribusiness Council, Georgia Farm Bureau, Georgia Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association, and others throughout the state to promote the passage of this crucial legislation.

As the nation’s largest producer of peanuts and the second-largest producer of cotton, Georgia's agricultural economy depends on access to effective crop protection tools, like glyphosate, for successful harvests. Glyphosate alone saves Georgia farmers an estimated $36 million annually compared to traditional tilling methods and pricier alternatives.

“We applaud Senator Sam Watson, Representative Meeks, and the other bill sponsors for their leadership on behalf of Georgia farmers,” added Burns-Thompson. “The Modern Ag Alliance urges the full Senate and House to take up and pass this important, common sense legislation.”
