St. Louis, MO — Today, in a show of support for Missouri agriculture, the Missouri House of Representatives passed House Bill 544—legislation that safeguards farmers’ continued access to the essential crop protection tools they need to feed and fuel America.
“For too long, anti-ag activists and the litigation industry have tried to tell Missouri farmers how to do their job—without understanding the real-world consequences that would be felt at every dinner table in America,” said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. “HB 544 provides the certainty Missouri farmers need to continue producing safe, affordable food for families across the country.”
Missouri is a national leader in corn and soybean production, two crops that rely heavily on crop protection tools to defend against harmful weeds and keep yields high. 91% of soybean acres and 66% of corn acres in Missouri depend on proven tools like glyphosate. Without them, farmers' input costs could more than double, meaning more could go out of business, and ultimately, less food on our shelves.
Sponsored by Rep. Dane Diehl, HB 544 addresses this by reaffirming that the federally approved label is the law, ensuring clear, science-driven standards that keep Missouri’s $93.7 billion agriculture industry thriving.
“We commend the Missouri House for standing with farmers and passing this crucial legislation, and we look forward to working with the Senate over the coming weeks to send this bill to Governor Kehoe’s desk,” added Burns-Thompson.
