St. Louis, MO — Today, the Iowa Senate passed Senate File 394—critical legislation that ensures farmers' continued access to essential crop protection tools.

"Farmers are grateful for the Iowa Senate’s action today to preserve their access to critical tools needed to grow the food, fiber, and fuel we all rely on," said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. "If farmers lose access to key crop protection inputs due to meritless litigation, it will cripple their ability to compete and cause food prices to go even higher. That’s why the overwhelming majority of Iowans support legislation that protects farmers’ tools, and not the trial lawyers and radical, anti-ag activist groups that want to ‘end capitalism’ and put our farms at risk."

SF 394 reasserts that federally approved pesticide labels are the law, and that companies cannot be subject to relentless litigation if they follow the law..

This isn’t just good policy, it has broad bipartisan support: The Modern Ag Alliance’s recent Ag Insights Survey found that 96% of farmers and 86% of all Iowans, including 89% of Republicans and 83% of Democrats, are more likely to support leaders who stand with farmers over trial lawyers. SF 394 is also supported by leading statewide agricultural organizations, including the Iowa Department of Agriculture, Agribusiness Association of Iowa, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Seed Association, and Iowa Soybean Association.

Crop protection tools are the backbone of modern farming, helping growers maintain high yields and low costs as well as implement conservation practices. In Iowa, these products are essential to corn and soy production—key contributors to the state's $43 billion agricultural economy.

"MAA and Iowa farmers are grateful for the support of the bill sponsor Senator Mike Bousselot and the rest of the Iowa Senate," said Burns-Thompson. "We look forward to working with House leaders to provide the certainty farmers need."
