Modern Ag Alliance Commends Missouri Senate Committee for Standing With Farmers

St. Louis, MO — Today, Missouri lawmakers took a decisive step to protect farmers’ access to essential crop protection tools as the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources voted on a bipartisan basis, 6-1, to advance Senate Bill 14—legislation sponsored by Senator Justin Brown that ensures consistency in product labeling standards. 

“This bipartisan vote signals Missouri’s strong commitment to safeguarding its agricultural economy by ensuring farmers have access to the tools they need to stay competitive,” said Modern Ag Alliance Executive Director Elizabeth Burns-Thompson. “This legislation ensures Missouri farmers can focus on what they do best: growing the food, fuel, and fiber we all depend on.” 

SB 14 reinforces a science-based, uniform approach to pesticide regulation by providing certainty for Missouri farmers that federally approved pesticide labels remain the standard for health and safety warnings.  

As a leading U.S. producer of corn and soybeans, Missouri’s agricultural economy depends on access to effective crop protection tools, like glyphosate, to control invasive weeds, improve yields, and keep food production costs in check. 66% of corn and 91% of all soybean acres in Missouri rely on glyphosate, which is estimated to save Missouri farmers $358M annually compared to traditional tilling methods and pricier alternatives.
