Supreme Court Decision Delivers Important Clarity for America’s Farmers
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Monsanto Co. v. Durnell is a significant win for American agriculture and the farmers who rely on trusted, EPA-approved crop protection tools every season.
In a 7–2 decision, the Court affirmed that pesticide labels should be guided by EPA’s science-based review, not a shifting patchwork of state-by-state requirements. For farmers, that clarity matters.
Farming already comes with enough uncertainty. Growers are facing tight margins, rising input costs, unpredictable weather and a long list of pressures that make it harder to plan from one season to the next. They should not also have to wonder whether the crop protection tools they safely use and depend on will remain available.
Crop protection tools help farmers manage weeds, protect yields, keep costs down and support conservation practices such as no-till farming. These tools are part of how farmers grow the food, fuel and fiber families rely on every day. Losing access to them, or forcing farmers to navigate conflicting labeling rules across state lines, would make an already difficult job even harder.
The Court’s opinion reinforces that EPA has a rigorous review process and that federally approved labels are the law.
This issue has always been bigger than one product or one company. It is about whether farmers, consumers, and the entire supply chain can continue depending on a regulatory system rooted in science, consistency, and common sense.

The Court’s decision is an important step toward protecting farmer access to the tools that help keep American agriculture productive, sustainable and affordable. It also sends a clear message: science-based regulation should remain the foundation for pesticide labeling decisions.
